New Year’s Eve With The MacPherson Language Institute

Greetings to you all from The MacPherson Language Institute! I would like to welcome you all to the first of our weekly blogs on all things English. New Year’s Eve has come and gone and now we are looking to offer you regular access to On Point: A Business English Blog. We will look at targeted training for Business English, vocabulary and grammar for everyday English, online English learning, and much more.

New Year’s Eve Festivities

Here at the MLI, we rang in the New Year in typical Canadian style with a touch of German influence. Back in Canada, we usually head to a bar to watch live music or join friends for a house party. This year we traveled to the mountains for a getaway with friends in a rented cottage. The German touch came with the addition of fireworks at the stroke of midnight and the great meal we had. We start off with a warm drink of home-made grog. A concoction of honey, rum and hot chocolate. That warms the belly and sets the mood for a festive party night! Later, as evening sets in, we gather in the kitchen to start preparing the raclette ingredients. This is another one of the German influences. Someone cuts the vegetables, another cuts the meat, and I look after the marinades. (I won’t give out those secret recipes!) Then we sit down around the table and dig in! After supper, we get the dishes out of the way and the kids get ready for bed. All the sliding in the afternoon has them worn out!

As midnight approaches, we check that our supplies are at the ready. A drink in hand, bottle rockets prepared with the fuses open, a nice cigar and then we can head outside to the garden. With each rocket, we wish each of our different groups of friends and family a happy and healthy new year. We also make sure to leave the last one for us. Seal it all with a good luck kiss and we can go back inside to the warmth of the fire!
